Waterways Holidays is promoting boating holidays in the UK this autumn and recommends its top five Canals for Autumn Colour.
The list includes the Shropshire Union Canal, Middlewich Branch, which offers a choice of routes and the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in South Wales canal which follows the line of the beautiful and heavily-wooded Usk Valley from Brecon. Also on the list is the Basingstoke Canal whose western course from Woking forms a leafy wildlife corridor, a designated SSSI, which links attractive villages such as Ash, Fleet, Crookham and Odiham, and the Macclesfield Canal, a tree-lined canal which follows the natural curves of the land and has only one flight of locks to navigate. Waterways Holidays' final suggestion is the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal from Stourport which tracks the course of the River Stour north through pretty countryside to The Bratch.
As an example of prices, a week’s hire of a 56-feet long narrowboat on the Shropshire Union Canal, starting from Middlewich, costs from £914 this autumn, including October half term week starting Friday 21 October. With a fixed double berth and either two singles, or a ‘made-up’ second double, the ‘Montgomery Navigator’ is equally suitable for couples or a family of four.
