The Old Ghost Road, an 85km route through South Island’s Buller Gorge, is the latest of New Zealand’s cycle trails to open (12 December 2015) and, with the existing 22 trails of the national project, can be incorporated into a tailor-made trip by Silver Fern Holidays.
The new route is best suited to experienced mountain bike enthusiasts as it offers challenging terrain through remote bush that includes both mountains and deep river gorges.
The New Zealand specialist suggests combining a four-day ride on the Grade 4 Old Ghost Road with other varied trails on South Island like the Dun Mountain loop from Nelson, the Queenstown Trail and the St James Trail, to create a South Island holiday that includes down-time in the Abel Tasman National Park, thrills and spills in Queenstown and hot-spa relaxation in Hanmer Springs.
The 2,500kms of tracks across the country that make up the national New Zealand Cycle Trail provide routes for every ability, including easy rides on gravel tracks with welcoming B&Bs along the way, such as the Hauraki Rail Trail in the Coromandel.
A Silver Fern Holidays tailor-made trip for cycling enthusiasts starts at £2950 per person for a 21-day tour including accommodation, bike hire, maps and 24/7 support while on holiday. Silver Fern Holidays can also book international flights and any mode of transport within New Zealand.
