Shangri-La Debut in Sri Lanka

Luxury chain Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts opened its first hotel and spa in Sri Lanka in June 2016.

The 300-room Shangri-La Hambantota Resort & Spa is also the first five-star property in the resort which has been developed on a 145-acre former coconut plantation on the island's south coast, a little more than four hours drive from Colombo's international airport.

Ideally sited near secluded beaches, historic temples, quaint fishing villages and national parks, the resort also features an 18-hole golf course, a spa with 12 indoor and outdoor treatment rooms, three salt-water swimming pools, four restaurants and bars and an artisan village showcasing local crafts. It has an area for families with children's pool and play area and another section designed for adults only. A range of activities is available including yoga, beach volleyball, mountain biking and jogging.

Guestrooms are modern and spacious with shutters, polished wooden floors and balconies overlooking the ocean or lush garden. The 21 larger suites provide the ultimate in privacy and butler service. All guests have access to free Wi-Fi. Function rooms and private dining options are available for special functions such as weddings.

The resort can be booked through Kuoni and Premier Holidays, for example. Prices start from £1,381 for seven nights
