AmaWaterways Returns to River Douro in 2013

AmaWaterways has announced that it is reintroducing cruises on the River Douro in Portugal after an absence of nearly two years.

The luxury cruise line is to operate two new cruise itineraries between March and November 2013 onboard the brand new vessel AmaVida due to launch in March 2013.

The 108-guest ship features staterooms and suites ranging in size up to 323 sq ft, most of which will have balconies. Guests will also enjoy a sun deck swimming pool, a fitness centre and a spa, as well as flat-screen televisions in each room and ship-wide Wi-Fi.

The new 'Enticing Douro’ cruise is available as a seven-night cruise only or 10-night land-cruise holiday (with three nights five-star bed and breakfast hotel accommodation in Lisbon). The AmaVida departs Porto to cruise to Régua, Barc d’Alva, Vega Terrón, Pinhão and Bitetos. The itinerary includes complimentary excursions to the Trás-os-Montes Region; Salamanca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; a Castelo Rodrigo tour; Palacio de Mateus palace tours and the 14th century Alpendurada Monastery.

The week long cruise costs from £1466 per person, including all meals, wine, beer and soft drinks with dinner and complimentary wi-fi. The 10-night land-cruise costs from £1954 per person.

The 13-night 'Port Wine & Flamenco’ itinerary is a land-cruise holiday starting with a three-night stay in Madrid before meandering along the Douro between the Spanish border town of Vega Terrón and the northern capital of Portugal, Porto. The final three nights are spent in Lisbon. Guests visit the small town of Pinhão, famous for its wine, then the beautiful region of Trás-os-Montes; the former Roman village of Bitetos and its 11th-century Alpendurade Monastery and Porto. Prices start from £2841 per person.
