A new initiative is set to increase the availability of freshly-sourced local food in Oxford.
Cultivate is a not-for-profit social enterprise that will bring fresh, local, organically-grown food direct from farmers to the city and surrounding communities. Cultivate is developing a five-acre market garden and other small farms, to grow prganic produce. A unique feature of the operation is a mobile greengrocery, the Cultivate VegVan, which will set up wherever communities want it. Hence Cultivate will be ready to react with great flexibility to the needs of the community it serves.
Cultivate describes itself as "people-powered". It is a co-operative owned, run and financed by its members. Early 2012 sees a major new community share offer.
What's the idea?
Cultivate aims to make great local food in Oxford affordable, convenient and accessible to more people in and around the city.
As well as taking local food on the road with its VegVan, the group will be running regular pop-up markets in neighbourhoods and workplaces, creating new outlets for local produce all over the city.
Everything on the VegVan will be grown by Cultivate, or sourced as locally as possible from other organic farmers. Customers will know that they are supporting sustainable food, minimising impact on the environment by reducing food miles, avoiding pesticides and artificial fertilisers and protecting ecosystems.
